The Division of Nursing within the Bureau of Health Professions of the Health Resources and Services Administration administers Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act, a broad flexible authority responsive to nursing workforce development needs. Title VIII has six major components: Advanced Education Nursing program; Nursing Workforce Diversity program; Nurse Education Practice and Retention program; Loan Repayment and Scholarship program; Comprehensive Geriatric Education program; and the Nurse Faculty Loan program. These program components are closely aligned with the Division's strategic directions focusing on (1) increasing access to quality care through improved composition, distribution and retention of the nursing workforce; (2) increasing diversity in the nursing workforce; (3) increasing cultural competence in the nursing workforce; (4) improving the quality of nursing education and practice; (5) identifying and using data, program performance measures and outcomes to make informed decisions on nursing workforce issues; and (6) increasing the supply, distribution and retention of the nursing workforce through financial assistance.
